In the thick of tri-state apple orchard visits, agri-tourism is at its zenith.
Experts say agri-tourism has high potential in the tri-states.
"It's a big deal for us," said Steve Czipar, of Czipar's Apple Orchard south of Dubuque. "We get people from all over -- from out of town, Chicago, Rockford (Ill.), and we're supported by the local community."
Czipar couldn't put an exact figure on the number of visitors. His season runs for about 3 1/2 months, from Labor Day to around Thanksgiving.
"When we run out of apples, we start trimming trees," he said.
The season begins with a festival weekend that incorporates numerous activities into the traditional apple picking.
Schuster's Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze, in rural Dubuque County, has operated for the past 15 years.
The last few years, business has grown. Pam Schuster doesn't know if it's due to a lack of similar businesses in the area, but she offers the pumpkin blaster, something uncommon.
It resembles a small machine gun and fires a softball-size pumpkin. Customers aim for pumpkins sitting on a nearby combine in a crop field.
"People really enjoy that," Schuster said.
But there also is the attraction of picking pumpkins, in contrast to purchasing them at a retail outlet.
"Anything family-oriented," she said. "People like to get out and enjoy the weather in the fall. Weather can make or break you, however."
Schuster's business operates on six weekends, from late September to the end of October.
In Grant County, Wis., about two miles south of Lancaster, Vesperman Farms boasts a 5-acre corn maze, farm animals, hay wagon rides, a pumpkin catapult and snacks. The fall season runs from Sept. 20 to Nov. 2.
"It's all about fun," said Kyle Vesperman, who operates the family-owned enterprise. "We continue to add more and more things. We're always trying to enhance the experience and make it better for our customers."
This is the 11th year for the corn maze and the seventh for the pumpkin launch, which are very popular, according to Vesperman.
He believes there's plenty of room for growth in ag tourism.
"You've got people with farms, wineries and apple orchards," he said. "There's a lot more visitors you could find."
Keith Rahe, president and CEO of Dubuque Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, agrees.
"Our area of the Midwest is a sleeping giant," he said. "People recognize there's a lot of potential, and they're talking about it. But no one at this point has really put their arms around it."
Rahe acknowledges the apple orchards, wineries, corn mazes and pumpkin patches that "do extremely well. But when you look at agriculture -- what it is in the Midwest -- this area really is the breadbasket of the world."
Rahe, a tourism industry veteran who grew up on a farm in Dubuque County, points out the ag tourism industry could capitalize on visitors from America's coasts and overseas.
"Many don't know what's going on at a working farm, and people are exceptional at it," he said.
Rahe believes the key is opening up the working farms to visitors.
Visits to working farms, he adds, are the "tip of the iceberg" for ag tourism. Rahe notes that ag tourism isn't limited to just farms, but it can include John Deere, which produces agricultural equipment, and the dealers that sell the equipment.
"What we have to offer, there's so much potential to get even more exposure and recognize a growing industry," he said.
With the harvest under way, there's even more.
"Agriculture is what makes us unique," Rahe said. "Look at our beautiful, rolling topography, the leaves turning, the corn and soybeans maturing. What a tremendous package."
Jo Daviess County, Ill., is a popular destination.
"The wine business has been great for ag tourism," said Chris Hamilton, president and CEO of Visit Galena.org. "We are so rich with the vineyards and the other things, pumpkin patches and apple orchards included. There's also the interest from people in knowing where their food comes from."
He also cites the popular large barn quilt patches common in the county.
"One of the great things is people don't just drive around to see the quilt patches, but they get a great overview of our ag community," Hamilton said. "They see Holstein dairy farms and Angus beef farms. They see the crops and farm structures. This part of Illinois is perfect for ag tourism."
So is Crawford County, Wis., especially now.
"This is obviously a huge time for our (apple) orchards," said Bob Moses, president and CEO of Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce, who noted thousands of people come to the county in the fall.
The nearby Gays Mills Ridge boasts nine orchards, and Prairie du Chien has Shihata's Orchard.
Kathy Kopp, Platteville (Wis.) Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, is a huge proponent of bringing agriculture's message to the non-farming public.
"Ag-tourism is definitely on the rise," she said. "More and more visitors are traveling to this area because they want to see a real farm."
Kopp also cites the popularity of farmers markets.
"More and more people are wanting to know where there food comes from," she said.
She added that people are also drawn to Amish farm businesses -- furniture making, baked goods and flowers.
